The Race Nobody Admits They're Running

  • Safety concerns from rapid deployment
  • Growing competitive pressure from well-funded rivals

My assessment: OpenAI pioneered the current wave but faces the classic innovator's dilemma. Their lead is shrinking as competitors catch up with more resources and fewer legacy constraints.

Google DeepMind: The Sleeping Giant

Stated mission: Solve intelligence to advance science and benefit humanity

Actual strategy: Leverage Google's resources to overwhelm competition

Key strengths:

  • Virtually unlimited compute resources
  • Deep research bench (DeepMind + Google AI combined)
  • Integration with Google's product ecosystem
  • Data advantages from Google's services

  • Organizational bureaucracy

My assessment: Google has more AI talent and resources than any competitor. Their challenge is organizational, not technical. If they ever truly coordinate and focus, they're formidable.

Anthropic: The Safety-Conscious Challenger

Stated mission: Develop AI safely for the long-term benefit of humanity

Actual strategy: Build the best models while maintaining safety credibility

Key strengths:

  • Top-tier technical talent (many ex-OpenAI)
  • Safety-focused culture that attracts certain researchers
  • Less legacy baggage than competitors
  • Growing enterprise business

Key vulnerabilities:

  • Smaller scale than Google/Microsoft
  • Dependence on Amazon partnership
  • Tension between safety focus and competitive pressure
  • Less consumer brand recognition

My assessment: Anthropic is in the hardest position—trying to compete on capability while maintaining safety leadership. Claude's quality shows they can do both, but the balancing act gets harder as the race intensifies.

Meta: The Wild Card

  • Strong engineering talent

My assessment: The capabilities of Chinese AI labs are genuinely unclear. They could be behind, on par, or ahead in specific areas. This uncertainty itself is a risk factor.

The Five Things You're Not Being Told

Based on my research, here are the crucial facts being kept from public discourse:

1. Capability Scaling Hasn't Stopped

There's been speculation that we've hit diminishing returns in AI capabilities. Internal assessments suggest otherwise.

The next generation of models (GPT-5, Gemini Ultra 2, Claude 4) will show significant jumps in:

  • Complex reasoning
  • Long-term planning
  • Tool use and agency

The "plateau" narrative is partly strategic—lowering expectations makes eventual releases more impressive.

The AI hardware supply chain is critical. Nvidia's dominance is being challenged, but the entire category will grow.

Enterprise AI adoption is still early. Most companies haven't figured out how to use AI effectively. Those that do will outperform.

Second-order effects matter. Don't just invest in AI companies. Consider who benefits from AI adoption (cloud infrastructure, enterprise software, productivity tools).

For Your Family

Education needs to change. Current educational models don't prepare students for the AI economy. Supplement with AI literacy.

  • Better regulatory frameworks that don't just slow things down but improve outcomes
  • More investment in safety research that matches investment in capability research
  • Honest conversation about the tradeoffs we're making

"The weird thing about this moment is that we know it's historic. Usually you only recognize transformative periods in retrospect. But everyone in AI knows we're living through something that will be in history books. And we're mostly just showing up to work, doing our jobs, trying to stay ahead. It's surreal."
