The comparison to Thunderbird is not accidental. DeepSet Haystack is the recommended backend orchestration layer for retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines. The enterprise AI market in 2026 is reproducing a pattern that technology has cycled through multiple times: a powerful new capability emerges, gets consolidated into a handful of dominant vendor platforms, and then an open-source alternative decouples the commodity infrastructure layer from the proprietary value layer. Email went through this cycle. Databases went through it. Observability infrastructure went through it. Enterprise AI clients appear to be entering the same phase.
Mozilla’s decision to build Thunderbolt through MZLA Technologies — its for-profit subsidiary — rather than as a volunteer community project signals that the organization sees genuine commercial opportunity in enterprise AI data sovereignty, not just philosophical commitment to open source.
