Calculating exact age requires more than subtracting birth year from the current year — it must account for whether this year's birthday has passed, the differing lengths of calendar months, and leap years. This matters enormously for government exam eligibility, where a single day can determine whether a candidate qualifies. The calculator uses the same calendar arithmetic that official age-limit systems apply.
The calculation starts by extracting years, months, and days from both the birth date and the reference date (today, or a custom date you set). It first computes full years elapsed. Then it advances the birth date by those full years and counts remaining full months. Finally, it advances by those months and counts the leftover days.
For leap year handling, when a February 29 birthday falls in a non-leap year, the tool treats the birthday as having occurred on March 1 — the convention used by India's Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) for government service age calculations.
Government exam eligibility is checked by comparing your computed age on the exam cutoff date against the published minimum and maximum age limits for each exam category. A green checkmark appears when both bounds are satisfied; the tool also shows how many years of eligibility remain.
A UPSC aspirant born in late October checking whether their age on August 1, 2026 (the common UPSC cutoff date) still falls within the 32-year upper limit for General category.
An HR manager verifying the exact age of a job applicant on a specific joining date to confirm compliance with a company retirement policy.
A school administrator checking a child's age on June 1 to determine which academic year they should be admitted to under state board age rules.
A fitness enthusiast calculating their exact age in days to track a health milestone from a specific start date.
Scope note: Age eligibility information for government exams reflects general norms and is updated periodically; always verify current cutoff dates from the official notification. The tool does not account for jurisdiction-specific holiday adjustments to age cutoff dates.
