In 2024, everyone was a prompt engineer. In 2026, the job title barely exists. Not because prompts don’t matter — but because the scope expanded so dramatically that “prompt engineering” doesn’t describe the work anymore.

What Is Context Engineering?

Context engineering is the discipline of designing the complete information environment that an AI system operates in. It includes:

• System prompts — the AI’s “personality” and operational guidelines
• Retrieved context — documents, data, and information fetched at query time (RAG)
• Tool definitions — what tools the AI can use and how they’re described
• Memory management — what the AI remembers across conversations
• Output formatting — structured schemas that constrain responses
• Conversation history — what past messages are included and how they’re summarized

A prompt is a single message. A context is the entire information architecture surrounding the AI.

Analogy: Prompt engineering is writing a good question for an exam. Context engineering is designing the entire curriculum, selecting the textbooks, creating the rubric, and structuring the learning environment.

The Five Pillars of Context Engineering

Pillar 1: System Prompt Architecture

Modern system prompts aren’t one-paragraph instructions. They’re multi-section documents that define:

## Behavioral Guidelines
- Always cite data sources
- Express uncertainty when appropriate
- Never provide specific investment advice

- Include confidence scores (0-1) for predictions

## Tool Usage Rules
- Use database_query for factual lookups
- Use calculation_engine for financial modeling
- Use compliance_check before any recommendation

## Error Handling
- If data is missing, state what's missing and why it matters
- If a tool fails, explain the limitation to the user
- Never guess when you can look up

Pillar 2: Retrieval Design (RAG)

What information gets retrieved and how it’s presented to the AI matters more than the user’s question in many cases.

Key decisions:

• Chunk size — smaller chunks for precision, larger for context
• Retrieval strategy — semantic search, keyword search, or hybrid
• Reranking — which retrieved chunks are actually shown to the model
• Source attribution — how the AI knows where information came from

Pillar 3: Tool Design

The way tools are described determines how well the AI uses them:
