Cursor: The IDE That Thinks

First Impressions
Cursor isn't just an AI assistant—it's an AI-native IDE. This matters more than I expected. Instead of AI being an add-on, the entire editing experience is designed around human-AI collaboration.
Where Cursor Shines
Codebase understanding: Cursor indexes your entire project and maintains context. When I asked it to "add error handling consistent with how we handle errors elsewhere," it actually looked at my existing patterns and matched them.
Refactoring: Select code, press Cmd+K, describe what you want. Cursor refactors with awareness of the broader system. I refactored an entire authentication system in 15 minutes that would have taken hours manually.
Chat with codebase: Being able to ask "where is user authentication handled?" and get accurate answers pointing to specific files is transformative for navigating complex projects.
Multi-file edits: Cursor can make coordinated changes across multiple files. Add a field to a database model, and it can update the API routes, frontend types, and validation schemas simultaneously.
Where Cursor Struggles
Learning curve: Cursor's power requires learning its shortcuts and workflows. The first few days were slower than Copilot because I was learning the tool.
Occasional overconfidence: Sometimes Cursor makes sweeping changes when you wanted something targeted. The "apply diff" workflow requires careful review.
Resource usage: Cursor is heavier than VS Code. On my M1 MacBook Pro, I noticed fans spinning more often.
The Memorable Moment
At hour 28, I described a complex state management problem in the chat. Cursor not only explained the issue but showed me three approaches, analyzed tradeoffs, and let me pick. Then it implemented my choice across 6 files flawlessly. That interaction alone saved 4+ hours.

Claude Code: The Expert Consultant
Build Time: 87 hours (with a caveat I'll explain)
First Impressions
Claude Code operates differently from the others. It's not inline autocomplete—it's a terminal-based assistant that can read, understand, and modify your entire codebase. Think of it as pair programming with a senior developer who happens to have read every programming book ever written.
Where Claude Code Shines
Deep reasoning: When I presented a complex architectural decision, Claude Code didn't just give me code—it gave me a analysis of tradeoffs, potential pitfalls, and long-term maintenance implications. Then it asked clarifying questions before implementing.
Existing codebase integration: Claude Code excels at understanding existing systems. I tested it by having it extend a poorly documented legacy module, and it correctly inferred the patterns and conventions.
Quality of code: The code Claude writes is cleaner than what I write. Better variable names, more consistent patterns, more thoughtful error handling. I frequently found myself learning from its suggestions.
Complex explanations: When something wasn't working, Claude Code could explain exactly why, often identifying issues I hadn't even noticed.
Where Claude Code Struggles
Speed for simple tasks: For quick edits and obvious autocomplete, Claude Code is overkill. Opening the terminal, describing what you want, reviewing the diff—it's more steps than just typing.
Workflow integration: Claude Code is powerful but separate from your editor. The context-switching between editor and terminal creates friction.
Literal interpretation: Claude Code sometimes takes requests too literally. "Add validation" might add basic validation when you wanted comprehensive validation. Being specific matters.
The Caveat on Build Time
My Claude Code build time (87 hours) is misleading. Yes, it was longer than Cursor—but the codebase quality was noticeably higher. Less technical debt, better documentation, more robust error handling.
If I factor in the time I'd spend later fixing Cursor's quick-but-imperfect implementations, the real comparison might favor Claude Code for long-term projects.
The Memorable Moment
At hour 41, I had a bug that took me 2 hours to identify. I described the symptoms to Claude Code. In 3 minutes, it identified not just the immediate bug but an underlying architectural issue that would have caused similar bugs repeatedly. Then it refactored the system to prevent the entire category of bugs. This is senior developer behavior.

The Synthesis: When to Use What
After 247 hours of concentrated usage, here's my decision framework:
Use GitHub Copilot When:
- You're writing standard, pattern-heavy code
- Speed matters more than architectural quality
- You're working on well-established tech stacks
- Your task is mostly typing known solutions
- You prefer suggestions over discussions
Use Cursor When:
- You're working on a medium-to-large codebase
- You need to understand existing code quickly
- You're doing significant refactoring
- You want AI integrated into your entire workflow
- You value balance between speed and guidance
Use Claude Code When:
- You're making architectural decisions
- Code quality matters more than typing speed
- You're working on complex, novel problems
- You want to learn and improve as you work
- You're dealing with legacy systems
My Current Setup
After this experiment, here's how I actually work now:

Claude Code for complex decisions – When I'm stuck or making important architectural choices, I open the terminal and have a conversation

This hybrid approach has made me noticeably faster and my code noticeably better. The tools complement rather than compete.
The Bigger Picture
Here's what this experiment really taught me:
AI coding tools aren't replacing developers. They're creating a new kind of developer.
The developers who thrive with AI assistance will be those who:
- Know when to use which tool
- Review AI suggestions critically
- Focus on problems that require human judgment
- Leverage AI for learning, not just output
The developers who struggle will be those who:
- Use AI as a crutch without understanding
- Accept all suggestions uncritically
- Try to use one tool for everything
- Resist the workflow changes AI enables
The choice isn't whether to use AI coding assistants. That's already decided by competitive pressure. The choice is how thoughtfully you integrate them into your practice.
