Both Gemini and ChatGPT now offer powerful image editing capabilities. We tested both on identical tasks — photo transformations, object removal, style changes, and creative edits — to find out which one delivers better results.

Image editing AI has taken a massive leap in 2026. Both Google Gemini (with Imagen 3) and ChatGPT (with DALL-E 4) now offer sophisticated image editing that goes far beyond simple filters. You can transform photos, remove objects, change styles, and create entirely new compositions using natural language instructions.

But which one is actually better? We ran 10 identical editing tasks on both platforms to find out.

The Test Setup

We used the same source images and identical editing instructions for each test. Both platforms were tested with their latest models (as of February 2026). Each result was rated on a 1-10 scale for quality, accuracy, and creativity.

Test 1: Background Replacement

Prompt: "Replace the background with a sunset beach scene. Keep the subject natural-looking with proper lighting adjustments."

Results

  • Gemini: Excellent edge detection, natural lighting transition, believable background. The subject's hair edges were handled particularly well. Score: 9/10
  • ChatGPT: Good background, but the lighting on the subject didn't quite match the sunset. Slight halo effect around edges. Score: 7/10

Winner: Gemini. The lighting consistency between subject and new background was noticeably better.

Test 2: Object Removal

Prompt: "Remove the person standing in the background on the left side. Fill in naturally."

Results

  • Gemini: Clean removal with excellent inpainting. The filled area matched the surrounding texture perfectly. Score: 9/10
  • ChatGPT: Good removal but with a slight blur in the filled area that was noticeable at full resolution. Score: 7.5/10

Winner: Gemini. The inpainting quality was clearly superior.

Test 3: Style Transfer (Photo to Illustration)

Prompt: "Convert this photo into a Studio Ghibli-style illustration while maintaining the composition and character likeness."

Results

  • Gemini: Beautiful illustration style but the character's face changed noticeably. Lost some of the original person's features. Score: 7/10
  • ChatGPT: Stunning Ghibli-style result with much better facial likeness preservation. The art style was more cohesive and polished. Score: 9/10

Winner: ChatGPT. For style transfers that need to maintain facial likeness, ChatGPT was significantly better.

Test 4: Color Grading

Prompt: "Apply a warm, cinematic color grade similar to a Wes Anderson film. Saturate the pinks and yellows, desaturate the blues."

Results

  • Gemini: Subtle and professional color grading. The result looked like it was done in Lightroom by a professional. Score: 8.5/10
  • ChatGPT: Slightly over-saturated. The Wes Anderson aesthetic was captured well, but the effect was too heavy. Score: 7.5/10

Winner: Gemini. More professional, subtle color work.

Test 5: Face Consistency (Multiple Edits)

Prompt: "Create 4 variations of this person: in business attire, in casual wear, in sportswear, and in traditional Indian clothing. Maintain exact facial features across all variations."

Results

  • Gemini: Face varied slightly across versions. The traditional clothing version had particularly different facial features. Score: 6/10
  • ChatGPT: Remarkably consistent facial features across all four versions. Only minor variations in expression. Score: 8.5/10

Winner: ChatGPT. Face consistency is a clear strength of DALL-E 4.

Test 6: Text in Images

Prompt: "Add the text 'WOWHOW PROMPTS' in a modern, bold sans-serif font at the top of the image."

Results

  • Gemini: Clear, readable text with good font choice. Minor kerning issues but overall professional. Score: 8/10
  • ChatGPT: Clean text rendering with better font weight and spacing. Score: 8.5/10

Winner: ChatGPT by a slight margin.

The Verdict

It's nearly a tie, but each platform has distinct strengths:

  • Choose Gemini for: Photo editing tasks — background replacement, object removal, color grading. Gemini treats your photo more like a photo editor would.
  • Choose ChatGPT for: Creative transformations — style transfers, character consistency, adding text, creating artistic variations. ChatGPT treats your photo more like a creative canvas.

People Also Ask

Can AI image editing replace Photoshop?

For simple edits (background removal, color grading, style transfers), AI is already faster and often better than manual Photoshop work. For pixel-precise professional editing, Photoshop is still necessary but increasingly augmented by AI features.

Are AI-edited images detectable?

AI detection for edited images is improving but not reliable. For professional use, the ethical approach is to disclose significant AI editing, especially in journalism, legal documents, or advertising.

Which is cheaper for image editing?

Gemini's image editing is included in the free tier with limits. ChatGPT's image editing requires Plus ($20/month). For occasional use, Gemini is the cost-effective choice.
