About Word & Character Counter
Word and character count affects everything from SEO content strategy to platform character limits and contract deliverables. Blog writers, copywriters, and SEO strategists need to know not just how many words a document contains, but how long it takes an average reader to consume it, how frequently key terms appear, and whether the text structure meets readability benchmarks. A real-time counter that updates as you type eliminates the round-trip to a separate tool and catches issues mid-draft.
How It Works
Word counting splits text on whitespace boundaries and filters out empty tokens, giving an accurate count regardless of multiple spaces or line breaks. Character counting iterates over the string and produces two values: total characters (including punctuation, spaces, and line breaks) and characters excluding whitespace. Sentence counting uses punctuation detection (periods, exclamation marks, question marks) with handling for abbreviations like "Dr." or "e.g." that should not trigger false sentence boundaries.
Reading time divides the total word count by 238 words per minute, the median reading speed for adults established by a 2019 meta-analysis of 190 studies. Speaking time uses 150 WPM, which matches the pace of professional narrators and presenters. Both figures are shown in minutes and seconds for precision.
Keyword frequency analysis tokenizes the text, normalizes case, strips common stopwords (a, the, and, is, etc.), and ranks the remaining terms by occurrence count. This gives a quick signal for whether a key topic term appears at an appropriate frequency relative to the document length without requiring a full SEO platform.
Who Is This For
A freelance writer verifying a 2,000-word article deliverable hits the exact client specification before submitting for payment.
An SEO specialist auditing 15 landing pages to confirm each has at least 400 words of body content before a site relaunch.
A podcast producer pasting a script to check the estimated speaking time fits within a 20-minute episode target.
A social media manager drafting a LinkedIn post and monitoring the character count to stay under 3,000 characters while keeping the hook visible before the "see more" truncation at 210 characters.
