Invoice generators, GST calculators, and accounting spreadsheets built for Indian businesses. Starting at $4.
Browse Finance TemplatesHSN and SAC codes are mandatory on GST invoices for most Indian businesses. Using the wrong code can apply an incorrect tax rate, causing ITC mismatches in your buyer's GSTR-2B and potential demand notices. With over 5,000 HSN codes in the Indian GST schedule, finding the right classification for a product — especially composite or manufactured goods — requires a searchable database rather than manual browsing of the official schedule.
The search engine uses fuzzy text matching on the HSN code description database. Enter a product name (e.g., 'laptop', 'readymade shirt', 'solar panel') or a service description (e.g., 'consulting', 'legal services', 'IT services'). Results return the best matching codes with official description, chapter, and applicable GST rate.
Results show the 4-digit chapter heading, 6-digit subheading, and 8-digit tariff item where available. Clicking any result expands the full classification hierarchy so you can verify the description matches your product. The GST rate shown is the standard schedule rate — special exemptions or concessional rates are noted where applicable.
SAC codes for services are searched in a separate database and returned with applicable GST rate and any standard exemption status.
A software company searching for the correct HSN code for 'packaged software' to ensure 18% GST is applied rather than 12%.
A garment manufacturer checking whether their cotton knitwear falls under 5% or 12% GST by matching the HSN to the rate schedule.
A legal firm finding the SAC code for 'legal services' to include on corporate client invoices.
A GST practitioner resolving a client dispute about whether their product is taxed at 12% or 18% by looking up the HSN code.
Scope note: HSN and SAC codes shown reflect the GST rate schedule as last updated by the GST Council. Rates change via GST Council notifications — always cross-verify on the CBIC website before using a rate on invoices. Does not cover Compensation Cess on specific goods, anti-dumping duties, or special rates for SEZ supplies.

About the HSN & SAC Code Finder
HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) is an internationally standardized system for classifying goods. Under GST, businesses with turnover above Rs 1.5 crore must use HSN codes on invoices.
SAC (Services Accounting Code) is the GST classification for services, similar to HSN for goods. All service providers must mention SAC codes on their GST invoices.
Required HSN digits depend on annual turnover: businesses below Rs 1.5 crore are exempt; Rs 1.5-5 crore requires 4-digit HSN; above Rs 5 crore requires 6-digit HSN. GSTN has mandated 8-digit HSN for certain sensitive product categories.
Yes. HSN codes classify product categories, not individual SKUs. Multiple products of the same type share an HSN code. For example, all cotton shirts (woven) may share an HSN code, while polyester shirts may have a different one with a different GST rate.
Yes. HSN codes are uniformly applicable across all states under the GST Act. The same 4-digit or 6-digit HSN code applies everywhere in India. Only the GST rate attached to the code can occasionally differ for states with special rate notifications.
