iPhone Ultra: the trade-offs are the story

Every report agrees on the shape — a book-style fold, roughly 5.5 inches closed and 7.6 to 7.8 inches open, wider than it is tall when unfolded, so the inner display behaves more like a small iPad than a stretched phone. The two compromises are the interesting part:

Touch ID instead of Face ID. The fold leaves no room for the TrueDepth array on the inner panel, so authentication reportedly moves to the power button, Apple’s iPad Air approach. Apps that assume Face ID for Apple Pay flows will still work; users will notice the ergonomics.

No telephoto lens. A thin folding body cannot fit the periscope module the Pro uses. If you buy the most expensive iPhone ever made, you get a worse zoom than the 18 Pro. Apple will frame it as a different product, and for once that framing is honest.

The size and the missing telephoto also tell you the price direction: everything reported says this sits above Pro Max. Nobody credible has a number, so we will not print one.

What developers should do this week

Three concrete tasks, in order of pay-off:

First, test your layouts at a wide, short aspect ratio. A 7.6-inch inner display that is wider than tall means iPhone apps get an iPad-shaped canvas without being iPad apps. Split views, sidebars and multi-column grids that you gated behind iPad idioms will be expected on a phone. If you build with SwiftUI, audit every hard-coded horizontalSizeClass == .compact assumption; if you build on the web, check the 800–900 px breakpoint band that most responsive designs skip straight past.

Second, remove Face ID assumptions. Use LAContext and biometryType rather than assuming .faceID on a device with a notch — copy strings like “look at your phone” will be wrong on Ultra.

For buyers in India

Apple’s India pricing usually appears within an hour of the keynote on apple.com/in, with pre-orders the Friday after the event and availability the following Friday. For reference, the iPhone 17 Pro launched at ₹1,34,900 in India for 256 GB, against $1,099 in the US — and that gap is what our work-hours price calculator is for. At a ₹60,000 monthly salary, the current Pro is about 438 hours of work; any “memory-driven” increase on the 18 Pro adds days, not minutes. Run your own number before the pre-order page opens rather than after.

If you hold a 17 Pro, a chip-and-modem year is the classic skip year. If you hold a 15 Pro or older, the 2nm efficiency and the variable-aperture camera are a genuine two-generation jump. And if you are buying Ultra, buy it for the screen, knowing the camera is a step back.
