About Advance Tax Calculator
Advance tax prevents a large year-end tax bill by spreading tax payments over four quarterly installments. For freelancers and professionals under Section 44ADA, the entire advance tax is due in a single payment by March 15 — a simpler but often overlooked schedule. Missing any deadline or underpaying below the required percentage triggers Section 234C and 234B interest at 1% per month, which adds up quickly on large income levels.
How It Works
The calculator first determines total annual tax liability: enter gross income, select taxpayer type (salaried/freelancer/business), and enable 44ADA if applicable. For 44ADA professionals, taxable income is automatically set to 50% of gross receipts. Both Old and New regimes are computed and the lower-tax option recommended.
For non-44ADA taxpayers, the quarterly installment schedule is generated: 15% of net tax (after TDS) by June 15, 45% by September 15, 75% by December 15, and 100% by March 15. Each installment shows the cumulative amount due and the running shortfall if prior installments were missed.
The penalty calculator uses Section 234C formula (1% per month on the installment shortfall) and Section 234B formula (1% per month if total tax paid before March 31 is below 90% of final liability).
Who Is This For
A freelance UI designer with Rs 18 lakh annual receipts under 44ADA determining their single March 15 advance tax payment under the New Regime.
A salaried employee with Rs 3 lakh additional rental income checking if they have an advance tax obligation beyond their salary TDS.
A chartered accountant advising a business client on the December 15 installment after a large Q3 contract increased their income significantly.
A consultant who forgot to pay the June installment calculating their Section 234C interest exposure for planning the September payment.
Scope note: Advance tax calculation uses FY 2025-26 rules and 44ADA limit of Rs 75 lakh. 44ADA receipt limit for FY 2025-26 uses the expanded limit for digital receipts — verify current limit on the Income Tax website. Section 234C interest is simplified to 1% per month; actual computation uses number of months from due date to payment date. Consult a CA for complex cases with multiple income sources and large TDS credits.
